MUMBAI: In order to encourage people to curb noise and air pollution, not only during Diwali but all the year round, Ola rolled out its digital campaign ‘Big Festival Small Step’. With more and more people taking cognisance of pollution around Diwali, Ola’s latest campaign seeks to keep the conversation around rising pollution and decreasing air quality alive throughout the year. The company puts forth the ideas of sharing rides and greener commuting as small steps towards making a big difference.

Ola also flagged off a year-long campaign titled #FarakPadtaHai on World Environment Day, 5th June 2017 to create awareness around shared mobility in the country. The company recently launched a much-acclaimed TVC on the same during Independence Day.

Ola senior director of marketing Mudit Shekhawat says, “The campaign asks people to take a small step on this big festival. Designed in the typography style, the video questions the rise in concern over pollution during Diwali and urges people to keep the concern all 365 days of the year. Bursting firecrackers or not is a matter of choice and the video uses the same power of choice to encourage people to choose to take a step against pollution all year around.”

NDTV promoters get clean chit from SEBI in disclosure case

MUMBAI: NDTV promoters Prannoy Roy, Radhika Roy and firm RRPR Holdings can breath a sigh of relief as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has cleared them of charges related to delayed disclosure of company details at the end of the financial year 2011-12. Proceedings against the company have been disposed.

At the end of every financial year, promoters need to disclose shareholding and voting rights details within 7 working days after 31 March. NDTV was alleged to have delayed this by 64 days to the BSE and one day to the NSE for the FY 2011-12.

SEBI stated that after investigation, it found them to have made the requisite disclosures to both the trading bodies within the stipulated time. While the BSE admitted that it had reported an incorrect receipt date while the NSE clarified that it got the details in time.

Fever FM revenue up but HT Media revenue shrinks

BENGALURU: Indian media group HT Media Limited (HT Media) reported a drop in consolidated revenues and increase in consolidated profits for the quarter ended 30 September 2017 (Q2-18, current quarter) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter (y-o-y). The company reported 11.2 percent y-o-y drop in consolidated total income at Rs 6,041.3 million in Q2-18 as compared to Rs 6,802.3 million. Net profit after tax, however, more than doubled (up 2.14 times) y-o-y to Rs 662.2 million in the current quarter as compared to Rs 309.3 million.

HT Media has four segments-Printing and Publishing of Newspapers & Periodicals (Printing); Radio Broadcast & Entertainment (Radio); Digital; and Multimedia Content Management (Multimedia). The y-o-y drop in revenue was mainly due to drop in revenues of the company’s printing segment.

The company reported an 18.4 percent increase in revenue for its radio segment that operates radio stations under the brand Fever FM for the current quarter. HT Media’s radio segment reported an operating profit of Rs 26.2 million as compared to an operating loss of Rs 3.3 million in Q2-17. HT Media, in its investor presentation for the current quarter, informed that its radio business continued robust growth and increase in profit margins. It says further there was revenue growth in core stations, while new stations continued to perform adding to top line in a profitable manner and that synergies in costs had brought in margin expansion.

Printing segment revenue declined 5.9 percent y-o-y in Q2-18 to Rs 4,948.9 million from Rs 5,259.5 million in Q2-17. Printing segment operating profit more than doubled (2.25 times) to Rs 1,048.8 million in Q2-18 as compared to Rs 467.2 million in Q2-17. HT Media’s digital segment revenue declined 9.5 percent to Rs 337 million from Rs 372.5 million. Digital segment reported an operating loss of Rs 116.2 million in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 128.6 million in Q2-17.

HT Media’s Multimedia segment reported operating revenue of Rs 444.6 million and an operating profit of Rs 8.5 million. The Multimedia segment had revenue of Rs 473.4 million in Q1-18 and an operating profit of Rs 2.9 million.

HT Media chairperson and editorial director Shobhana Bhartia said, “Advertising revenue growth continues to be a challenge in our coreprint business, with this quarter witnessing high level of uncertainty across industries on account of GST implementation. Our radio business continues to do well. New radio stations are generating revenue and the entire radio business witnessed an increase in operating profits. While advertising revenue in print has been soft, operating profits continue to grow steadily on the back of strong cost management and aided by favourable currency and commodity rates.”

“GST is expected to stabilise soon which should lead to a better macroeconomic environment and result in higher advertising spends. With growth coming back to core business, we hope to deliver better results to our shareholders,” added Bhartia.

MUMBAI: Global American content leader and NYSE-listed Lionsgate has finally set up shop in India to tap one of Asia’s biggest media markets. It has appointed Rohit Jain, a media industry veteran, to head the ops here as managing director.

Jain, who till some time back worked with DTH operator Videocon d2h as deputy CEO for seven years contributing to the company’s growth in size and its Nasdaq listing, confirmed to Indiantelevision.com over phone his appointment and opening of the Mumbai office.

Lionsgate India will spearhead all licensing to local linear and digital platforms in the territory from feature films, television series and library content under the Lionsgate and Starz brands. It will work closely with the studio’s theatrical distribution partners to maximise box office for Lionsgate films, and it will partner with local production companies to develop intellectual property for theatrical release as well as distribution across other media platforms.

Apart from that, Lionsgate India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of its American parent, will also explore investment opportunities throughout the Indian media market.

"We've been focused on the enormous opportunity created by the Indian marketplace for years, and Rohit checks off all the boxes as the right executive to lead our business there," said Lionsgate chief executive officer Jon Feltheimer in an official statement.

Feltheimer added: "Lionsgate brings to this territory a global content platform, an entrepreneurial mind set, and the agility of a next generation digital age company. Rohit is ideally qualified to leverage these strengths into accelerating growth and new business initiatives in the years ahead.”

Lionsgate has been steadily expanding its global content platform with the continued growth of Lionsgate UK into a leading film and television production and distribution company, a growing operation in China that has established strong relationships with nearly all major platforms in the territory and increased the studio's box office gross by 63 per cent from last year, and a new Canadian office that was opened in Toronto earlier this year.

"I'm thrilled to join Jon and the rest of the Lionsgate team as we continue to build the company's brand in India," according to Jain, a 20 years veteran of the Indian media industry.

Jain further pointed out that as India was the next logical frontier for Lionsgate's multi platform content creation, marketing expertise and digital initiatives, he was “incredibly excited” at the opportunities that lie ahead.

Boasting the world's second largest consumer population and fastest-growing middle class, India has achieved double-digit annual growth across television, film, interactive games and delivery of content to digital platforms. With over 800 television channels, more than 30 over-the-top platforms, 8,500 theatrical exhibition screens and an evolving interactive game business, opportunities for content producers and distributors are continuing to increase, according to Lionsgate.

In the past few years, the company said it has tripled its revenue from India and made Hindi-language film `Brothers, a remake of Lionsgate's critically-acclaimed `Warrior. A Hindi-language remake of the studio's action hit comedy `Red is also in the works with a possible involvement of Hindi film star Anil Kapoor.

Rohit Tiwari of Morris Street Advisors, who had previously served as Lionsgate's local sales agent in India, has transitioned to a consulting relationship to Lionsgate India, the company said.

The first major new studio in decades, Lionsgate is a global content platform whose films, television series, digital products and linear and over-the-top platforms reach next generation audiences around the world. In addition to its filmed entertainment, Lionsgate claims its content drives a growing presence in interactive and location-based entertainment, gaming, virtual reality and other new entertainment technologies.

MUMBAI: Dailyhunt has launched a fresh campaign to strike a chord with the audience across India. The campaign aims to target the youth between 18-24 years, to drive Dailyhunt mobile app installs and for the audience to get a better understanding of the breadth of content offered on the app.

The campaign shows many scenes from across India where different audience segments including students, working professionals and housewives are hooked to the Dailyhunt App, and who are getting their daily dose of news on a single mobile platform. Facebook US planning to broadcast live sporting events

MUMBAI: Facebook is actively looking at increasing its sports presence by launching its new Facebook Live service.

Speaking at a Sportel Tech Panel session on Social Video, Facebook global head of strategic partner development - sports media Rob Shaw pointed that the recent introduction of the Facebook Live service had altered the dynamics of its relationships with sporting rights holders.

According to Independent, a UK based online news portal, Facebook has recently launched a new platform for video content in the US called 'Watch'. Facebook has two billion users a month and that at least 650 million of those are sports fans, with another 200 million on its picture-sharing platform Instagram.

“Facebook is a phenomenal place to reach large audiences and we are now looking into and testing the possibility of actually broadcasting live sports content. It’s going to be a huge learning curve for us, for broadcasters, media companies, the leagues, because it’s not telephones, it’s different. It’s interactive, it’s social, it’s not a one-way conversation,” he added.

“So these are the things that we’re trying to work together with the leagues and gain their feedback on data and consumption so that we can understand what we can build in the future.”

Samsung becomes India's most attractive brand in 2017

MUMBAI: The crown for India’s most attractive brand has yet again gone to a South Korea-based company. Smartphone company Samsung dethroned LG as India’s most preferred brand.

LG has slipped to second position followed by Sony in the top 3. Tata, after falling by almost three ranks in 2016 has come back to hold its position to rank 4th in 2017. Honda ranks 5th after ranking 4th in 2016 and 6th in 2015. The 6th most attractive brand in 2017 is Apple, which has jumped 12 places after ranking 18th in 2016 and 15th in 2015.

The survey for the 4th edition of India’s Most Attractive Brands was conducted among 2,456 consumer influencers across 16 cities and generated nearly 5 million data points and 5,000 unique brand mentions, out of which the top 1000 brands have been listed in this year’s report.

TRA Research CEO N Chandramouli mentioned, “The one aspect that has somehow stayed constant is the fight for the top 3 ranks between Samsung, LG and Sony. Will this be the case even next year? Well it may be difficult to predict as the rankings this year have seen some major rank climbs and falls, making a few of the former new category leaders and the latter resigning from their coveted spot.”

One of the list’s major brand rank climbs is Patanjali; from ranking 371 in 2015 to ranking 87 in 2016 to making it to rank 12 in 2017.

Chinese mobile phone maker Oppo has claimed the 20th position by taking a major jump from its position at 341 in 2015.

In the Media-TV segment, NDTV has emerged as the numero uno channel followed by Aaj Tak and Sony Entertainment at number 2 and number 3 positions respectively. In Hindi GEC, Zee TV slipped to number 2 position with an overall ranking of 226 which is a major slip from its last year’s position of 93.

Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali emerged at number 1 position in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) category with an overall position of 12 which is 75 ranks up than its last year’s position at number 87. Colgate followed at number 2 position and saw a slip in its overall ranking by retaining its position at 43.

In food and beverage category, Brooke Bond tea saw a major slip in its ranking. The tea brand ranked at 120 in the category but slipped by 776 points in its overall ranking this year with 941 as compared to last year’s 165.

In the branded fashion category, homegrown brand Fastback emerged as a clear winner at number 1 spot beating international luxury brands Gucci at number 2 spot, Tommy Hilfiger at number 3 respectively.

In DTH sector, Tata Sky was the most attractive brand with an overall ranking of 315. Reliance DTH was among the worst losers as it ranks at 888. Cadbury Perk joined the bandwagon of losers with its rank at 949 as compared to the previous year’s 499, a difference of 450 ranks.

“This year we have incorporated the theme of diversity in the report. Diversity is something that our study radiates,” concluded Chandramouli.

Broadcasters, DPOs to crack down on piracy, analogue transmission

NEW DELHI: There is general agreement among broadcasters and delivery platform operators including direct to home (DTH) as well as digital cable operators that a joint industry task force should be set up to check and report cases of piracy in the third and fourth phases of digital addressable system (DAS).

There was general consensus that certain states – particularly Andhra Pradesh and Telengana – had high levels of pirated material on local television channels.

Such were the thorny issues being discussed in a meeting held between the All India Digital Cable Operators Federation and the DTH Operators with the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) on Wednesday.

As senior AIDCF member Ashok Mansukhani said that it was more appropriate for the stakeholders to meet in this manner than in courts of law.

Among others, the meeting was addressed by IBF President Punit Goenka, Jawahar Goel of Dish TV, AIDCF President Rajan Gupta and senior office-bearer S N Sharma.

Goel said there was an attempt by Punjab and other states to bring back what he termed as the ‘inspector raj’ by imposition of local taxes. Furthermore, he said broadcasters were free to give content to OTT or YouTube, but this should not be live as it would directly hit the DPOs like the DTH players and digital cable operators.

The larger multi-system operators (MSO) said the inefficient handling of piracy by broadcasters was the cause of their suffering. Broadcasters neglect to take actiom against operators carrying analogue signal. There are small MSOs who do not have CAS & SMS system and do not follow TRAI QoS guidelines so broadcasters should refrain from giving content to them. Hence a joint industry task force should be made to raid such operators / MSOs and initiate legal action against those operators. The News Broadcasters Association should also be made part of this.

Issues were also raised relating to OTT, Doordarshan’s FreeDish, and Reliance Jio and the DPOs alleged that providing signals to these entities led to huge losses to the digital cable and DPOs.

Answering various question in a presentation, Goenka said OTT rights and digital cable rights were two different issues and should not be confused. OTT was an interactive and on-demand platform and in any case was never free being part of a subscription bandwidth. Thus this should not be compared with other platforms.

YouTube content are only the ones that have already been broadcast and therefore, there was no conflict of interest. He denied any concessions to Reliance Jio and said it was in fact paying more than digital cable.

He expressed concern by the Jio announcement that its mobile phone could receive the signals of not only new LCD/LED television sets but also the old sets. AIDCF said that this would bring Jio under TRAI's regulations.

Goenka said he will advise IBF members to take up the issue with OTT providers, especially Reliance Jio. In any case, he said the present contracts forbid such activity.

He said broadcasters are not offering OTT content on television screen by connecting Reliance Jio phone through a cable and they prohibit such an activity. But agreeing with the concern of the AIDCF, he said this would be rigorously monitored and action will be taken in case there is any violation.

Referring to the AIDCF charge that pay channels were being given as Free to Air (FTA) to Doordarshan’s FreeDish after paying huge carriage fees, Goenka said that broadcasters like Star and Sony are offering paid live content free on Freedish but with a time lag of one year. He agreed that this should be implemented across all genres and it should be completely free to all platforms.

He said that in any case digital cable had more channels than FreeDish which primarily comprised FTA channels and so it was unreasonable to compare the two especially as the content was also being provided to digital cable operators.

The speakers from AIDCF said MSOs have invested around Rs 200 billion in digitisation and are yet to get the return on their investment. This is primarily on account of the growth in rates that the broadcasters demand every year. Hence it was now the question of viability and survival of the MSOs that broadcasters should come out with their MRP based pricing.

Veteran journo Rohit Gandhi sets up news platform for independent reporters

MUMBAI: When you have the credentials of having worked for CNN and CBC as an international journalist for several years, what do you do next? Well, you could start a news platform with a difference. Just like Rohit Gandhi has done by incorporating Global Live, which has set up Democracy News Live.

The network is owned by Gandhi and Vrinda Aggarwal, who was working with him in WION.

Says Gandhi who has designated himself as editor in chief, “Journalism channels have become partisan with political parties and are already sold to ideologies. It is difficult for an honest centre of the line editor to operate. Judges of courts are being questioned for their leanings. The environment is ripe to democratise journalism a bit more.”

His model, that of democratisation of news, is to allow hard working field reporters who make the news to become owners of a news platform. “They can publish the content and own it for life,” says Gandhi. “We even have a monetisation model in place.”

For now, the duo has invested about $400,000 and once it hits a certain benchmark, they will seek the second funding round.

Of course not anyone will be able to post news content. They will have to get past credentials and identification verification before getting the green signal to post their news videos, articles and pictures. A robust content management system and video platform will allow hacks to edit video on the cloud without having editing skillsets that FCP or Premier Pro require. Of course anyone violating journalistic ethics or resorting to plagiarism or fake news will get booted out of the news platform without any warning.

Artificial intelligence which has been built into the technology backend will make managing, search, and discovery so much easier for both journos and visitors.

A team of 23 tech specialists and editors have been at it, building the backend and CMS since 1 February 2017 when Gandhi left the Essel Group owned Indian English news channel WION to start his venture. He says he consciously stayed away from corporate or political funding, instead choosing to attract investment from a group of 20 private investors.

He explains: “The whole idea is to make sure that we don’t have influence of either a corporation or a political party. The professionals – from technology and journalism who came together to forge this alliance - found the idea so potent, that they not only invested but also helped in building the platform.”

Over the past few months, Democracy News Live has been building news content on its Youtube channel, though not much of it had been put out at the time of writing. It has set up a news studio in New Delhi and has even put reporters through training and the paces of anchoring.

And while Gandhi agrees television remains the best medium for disseminating news and information even today thanks to the wide distribution infrastructure that’s available, he still preferred to go online for a few reasons.

He elaborates: “While I am not against a news channel, I wanted to start out by putting out phenomenal content online. Then only after that do I want to think about going in for a linear feed when it reaches an inflection point. Our content could go out on radio, TV, online and even on 4K as it is being shot even on that format. With that kind of quality it can even and up on television.”

Gandhi is not worried about the business model as he believes advertisers follow audiences who follow great content. However, he cautions that he is not going to base the news content on Democracy News Live on advertisers’ needs. “We will have advertisers in due course,” he says. “But our editorial integrity and independence will be maintained.”

The Android and iOS app launches are planned for the coming week. They will have logins for reporters to file their stories and for readers to read.

Gandhi is planning to market the platform through the co-owners who will work with them.

He has the credentials to match his vision for Democracy News Live. At WION he was editor in chief and he left it after just a year of helping build it up from ground up. And in 2006, he was the reporter who broke the story about the terrorist group that was behind the 2006 Mumbai train bombings. Those will be put to the test as Democracy News Live begins to gain traction.

MUMBAI: Indian sports television executives are pretty familiar with this international sports rights veteran. Seamus O’Brien – who was promoter of the World Spots Group when the IPL telecast rights deal with Multiscreen Media (now Sony Pictures Networks India) blew up in the previous decade – has been appointed by leading sports rights firm MP & Silva as CEO effective 1 January 2018. Former CEO Jochen Lösch will transition to the role of a senior consultant at the company.

O’Brien has more than three decades of experience in the international sports industry around the globe. He started his career at CSI before setting up World Sport Group, of which he sold his majority stake to Lagardère Group in 2008. He continued to lead World Sport Group as executive chairman until 2015. He also served as deputy chairman of the executive committee of Lagardère’s sports and entertainment division.

Lösch noted: “I am very grateful to the shareholders that they gave me the opportunity to lead such a great company. My special thanks go to Riccardo Silva and the MP & Silva staff, which always supported me 100 percent. I am glad that I can continue working with MP & Silva as a consultant focusing mainly on ventures in Latin America. There are plenty of opportunities coming up, and MP & Silva is very well-positioned to grab them.”
